My first assignment was the typing of a summons. Being a graphic designer with no experience of juridical policies and procedures, I looked at the extremely boring template of a summons and decided there and then to redesign it.
Quite pleased with my artistic masterpiece, I put it in the lawyer’s inbox, and proceeded with the next instruction on the transcriber – an affidavit, which I also redesigned according to my formidable artistic instincts.
At the end of the day I was diplomatically told that I may under no circumstances redesign any templates of the law firm, as they were all dictated by the court.
It came like lighting: The sudden realization that the idea of a hardworking typist could cause chaos in a court. Imagine the chaos when each and every typist designs law documents according to her personal idea of ‘proper’! Of course, I kept my thoughts to myself and left my lawyer friend’s office a little humbler and wiser than before.
Unqualified leaders with bright ideas
Even twenty-three years into the ANC’s administration, the majority of ANC mayors, MPs, CEOs, LURs, and ministers, including the president, are still totally unqualified, finding themselves out of their depths in the positions they are occupying. In their capacity of senior members of the ruling party – and very important, cronies of the president – they simply follow their instincts without even realizing that the results could be disastrous.
Of course, I am supposed to empathize with them. But how can I when they don’t take rebukes, rudely given by the media and courts, to heart, and when they don’t even try acquiring the required education and training? Headstrong, like arrogant teenagers on a self-destructive mission, they keep up their bad work - creating more unemployment, more economical crises, more crime, more anger, more hate, and more of all that is tragic and devastating.
Hopefully the next election in 2019 will bring an end to unqualified people in positions of influence and authority.
