“Humankind cannot bear very much reality,” said T.S. Eliot. They live either happy or sad in a world they have created for themselves – a world where they see and hear only what they want to see and hear.
“There is an objective reality out there, but we view it through the spectacles of our beliefs, attitudes, and values.” - David G. Myers.
Even those realities in our make-believe world are distorted. “Reality is determined not by what scientists or anyone else says or believes but by what the evidence reveals to us.” - Alan Hale.
When the revealing evidence doesn’t concern us, we simply ignore it.
But along comes the day...
In fact, our reality is the leading cause of stress and by hook or by crook we are compelled to cope with it.
Let’s look at some of the methods people apply in their efforts to cope with their personal reality.
They....
Buy – something needed or wanted…
Cry – a little, or a river…
Drink – water, coffee, tea, Coke, liquor…
Eat – too little, too much, junk food, cake, chocolates, snacks of all sorts…
Freak out – frequently, always, ad nauseam!
Go – for professional treatment, on holiday, on a trip…
Hold - onto their dreams…
Ignore –what they cannot change…
Jog - ten miles a day…
Keep – themselves busy…
Love – their fellowman as much or as little as they love themselves…
Moan – all day, or seldom if ever…
Nag – all day, or seldom if ever…
Obey – or break established customs...
Play - games, sports, music, the fool, with the hearts and lives of others…
Question – right and wrong…
Read - the Bible, comics, romance, newspapers, Facebook, Twitter…
Smoke – vapour, cigarettes, marijuana, whatever fits in a pipe…
Take – vitamins, drugs, a trip to Timbuktu…
Utter – blessings and curses…
Vandalize – parks, streets, property comes hell or high water...
Write – books, blogs, emails, comments…
X-ray – what’s invisible with a vengeance…
Yawn – as things that go wrong by themselves can right themselves…
Zoom - in and out until reality reveals itself…
